horse back is a truly superb way to explore the lake districts fells, valleys and beaches. cumbria has many providers offering everything in the spectrum of horseback adventure. the trick is finding the ride you require. the best rule of thumb when picking a ride is: have you ridden before? if the answer is no, then you should go for a 1 or 2hr lead rein ride, this is where your guide has the option to take the horse under control with a second rein should you appear to not being enjoying yourself. if the answer is once or twice, and you can stop start and steer - then you should go for a 1 or 2hr trek. you will get the opportunity to walk and trot with this experience. any longer than 2hrs if you haven't ridden for a while and you will be walking like john wayne for some time. if the answer is: yes lots, then a hack is what you are after, you must have the ability to walk, trot and canter, options available are 1hr, 2hrs half day, full day and multi day. for anything longer than the 3hr half day having your own riding gear with you is strongly recommended.
